Filitosa, archeological protohistoric
site located on the commune of Sollacaro, in South Corsica, which,
occupied over a very long period, includes/understands in particular
inscribed menhirs as well as vestiges of civilization known as "torrean".
The oldest period corresponds at the end of the Neolithic era and
the beginning of the age of Bronze until towards 1500 before J-C.
It is represented by a certain number of menhirs.
The second period also belongs to the megalithic civilization which,
since 1500, created anthropomorphes menhirs undoubtedly representing
defunts then real pillars statues whose face is sometimes very carefully carved.
Lastly, at the beginning of the first millenium, at the time when
the age of Bronze finishes, representations of daggers and long swords
with rectilinear pommel in form of T, sometimes supported by a cross-belt,
appear on the menhirs. They testify to the social importance taken
by the warriors.
At that time, the area of Filitosa is occupied by Torreans, who transforms
in a fortress a spur barred by a cyclopean enclosure. They build there
famous "torre", circular monuments from 6 to 8 m high, composed
of a central room with vault in corbelling and access passages covered
with large flagstones. A certain number of menhirs of the former periods
then were split up and re-used like building materials.
About twenty
menhirs of various times were counted in Filitosa. They constitute
approximately half of the total staff of these monuments in Corsica.
